Siding Tips

Vinyl Siding

Cleaning House

Vinyl and aluminum sidings are virtually maintenance free, with a simple wet- brushing or hosing off all that is necessary. Sometimes stubborn areas of dirt could use harder brushing with 1/3c. laundry detergent, and 6 gallons of water. Add some chlorine bleach if fighting mildew. Work from the bottom up to about 5 ft. vertical sections. Rinse with plain water, going over previously washed sections so the runoff doesn’t dry on an already cleaned area!

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is very popular since it is virtually maintenance-free, reasonably priced and easy to find at local homecenters or lumber yards. Thicker siding is a bit stiffer and will also cost a bit more, but remember the pro’s tend to go with .042 gauge and thicker.

Siding Choices

Most larger vinyl siding manufacturers now make varigated grain products - a weathered looking, multi-colored grain effect - LP, CertainTeed, and Variform are a few. Our new Norman Rockwell line has a very nice cedar-like grain, and solid colors guaranteed for 25 years including dark colors like barn red through dark green.

There are also several companies offering injection molded shingle panels with grains taken directly from real cedar shingles. I worked at CertainTeed for several years prior to ending up here - I know LP and CertainTeed both have excellent shingle panels.
