: When I turn-on a stove top burner, the igniter makes the usual "zapping" sound,
: then the electronics go dead; that is, all igniters and the digital clock
: display. After a few minutes, they come back on.
: The clock then needs to be re-set in the same way that it would if there had been
: an electrical failure.
Probably because there has.
There should be nothing in common between most gas range's surface burner ignition system and the electronic oven control except the house power supply and the internal range wiring.
The wall outlet should be checked for proper polarity and grounding. And yes, a problem in either of those may only present itself after years of working Ok on the same circuit. I don't know why but it is often the case.
If that's not the cause, the range's internal wiring may need to be inspected for loose connections or faults. Lastly, a problem in the cooktop's 'spark module' might (on a very slim chance) cause some sort of backfeed which could disrupt the range's electronic control.
