: Our 10-year-old Whirlpool refrigerator is leaking water onto the floor in the back.
: We took the back panel off and discovered the plastic pan was full (We emptied it and it
: has filled nearly half the pan in 7 hours). We have an icemaker, but the leak doesn't seem
: to be coming from there. It does, however, drip fairly steadily from the back of the fan
: assembly. Refrigerator is doing fine at cooling. Not sure if it's turning off as often as it
: should or not...What do you think?
Two things could cause the drain pan under the fridge to overflow; 1/ The water there not evaporating like it should between defrost cycles (for whatever reason). 2/ More moisture than normal being recovered during a defrost cycle.
Too much moisture from the defrost cycle could be caused by poorly sealing door seals/gaskets, someone leaving the door(s) open, the light staying on when the doors are closed (fairly unlikely) or air leaks into the cabinet from elsewhere. Evidence of such should usually be able to be seen an excessive frost buildup on the evaporator (cooling) coil in the freezer compartment.
You can read about the defrost system of a frost free refrigerator (or freezer) at the following link:
