: : I have an intermittent stalling problem with my 91 Cavalier. Car runs fine except after about 30 minutes it will stall when I come to a stop. It immediately re-starts and idles fine, but stalls when put in gear. It must sit for at least 30 minutes before it will run in gear, and after a few miles stalling will occur again. I've cleaned throttle body and changed fuel filter, but problem still occurs. Check of car's computer showed no failure codes. Mechanic could not reproduce stalling but said problem could be with: electric fuel pump; fuel pump relay; or ignition coil or module. Could problem be one of these or a vacuum leak?
: If your Cavalier is a front-wheel drive car made by General Motors, then I would say that your problem is the lockup solenoid in the transmission. I have a 89 Buick Century with the same problem and after some research on the internet I found out that the lockup solenoid was the problem. The solenoid costs $20 but to have it replaced a transmission shop will charge you about $350. I replaced the solenoid myself during the memorial day weekend. It took me about 5 hours. My car has been running great ever since I replaced that solenoid. If you are interested in doing the job yourself I can give you website URL where I got the information. JCGARCIA42@aol.com
Answer:Yes the possibility does exist the solenoid is the fix .If it feels like the car is a vehicle with a standard transmission that is being driven by someone unfamiliar with driving a standard transmisssion car, when it stalls,,ie Jer jerk jerk stall .Then likelyhood is that is your problem .If not i would suggest you look elswhere.
