Yes, that is the only option for getting more wires to where you need them.


But it, depending on the rating of the fan, there could be a number of options on a switch that only requires the 2 wires. There are "paddle fan" dimmers (by Lutron) that give 3 speeds with the 2 wires (rated at 1-2 amps), there are radio control wall switches, by Hunter, Hampton Bay, Casablanca, and others, thaat provide all speeds, and light control, all from the 2 wires.
