I had this problem a few years ago and the problem was caused by the outside drain line being frozen so that the water could not get out of the line. The pump ran for so long that the water in the pit was steaming.

The float or switch that turns the sump pump on must be stuck. Unplug the pump and look for the float. It is either on rod - if it is a pedesal type or on a seperate wire if it is a submersible. The float should move freely - not hang up on the rod or bump into the sides of the sump pit. If you can find the owner's manual it will tell you how to setup the float. The only other thing I can think that may have happened is the float switch is stuck in the on position. The float moves freely, try wiggling the float up and down to actuate the switch. This may free it up. Good luck
