should we remove the wood strips with nails in then and replace them when recarpeting?

We are redecorating our family room. Before
installing new carpet, we want to paint the walls.
We have already taken the old carpet out. We keep
stepping on the wood strips with nails in them
(could someone let me know what the official term
for them is). Since they keep getting in the way,
we have considered removing them and getting new
ones when we lay the carpet. We are worried about
damaging the concrete if we do this. Should we be
worried?

Thanks
Paul
