: : Sara:
: : Interesting comment! How long would you figure the urine stains were into the floor itself? It sounds like a perfect solution for folks that have the time to try to rid the stains, by using this method continuously. It actually took out the stains in the flooring after the sanding process?
: : I often encounter pet urine stains and often the solution is to find existing boards in closets and use them in the stained areas as wood ages over time and new will not work.
: : Thanks for your comments. I'll have to try that on a sample piece.
: Hey Sara and Ken,
: Thanks for the comments and ideas! I've thought about the idea of removing wood from the closets, but this is one of the places they urinated!
: If I get the time and energy, I'll try the ammonia trick, that sounds good. But we may just sell and let someone else deal with it someday.
: Thanks again for the great advice. I knew we couldn't be the only ones with this problem.

I have sanded and removed pet stains from our oak floor by soaking the stained area only with slightly diluted bleach. I was hesitant to use the ammonia because they are so similar. I've always thought ammonia would darken a urine stain and worden the odor. By repeatedly bleaching each stain most were removed almost completely now I plan to seal each stain before I do the whole floor color stain so that the really raw wood of the bleached areas won"t pick up an excessive amount of color and willthen blend better with the rest of the floor. Then I'll need to seal the floor and this is my problem. I refuse to get rid of my best friend just because he has become a little incontinant, I would hope they wouldn't do that to me. Polyurethane, which is all I've been able to find do-it-yourself or professionally done wood floor seal, is not resistant to urine and will allow it to seep into the wood. After all my work I need to find a sealant that will resist urine. Help!
