I used boiling water (straight from the kettle) and washed the glue off of my floor. For tough spots I used a plastic putty knife. I had the dark brown adhesive and the cardboard looking stuff under my kitchen floor. Roll linoleum had been glued down on unfinished pine floors (circa 1947). Someone from the EPA told me the “cardboard” looking stuff may contain asbestos. Best of luck.
