Nancy:
Welcome to our new site. Laminate flooring hasn't improved the resale value of homes that I have seen thus far. In consideration of the fact you're trying to achieve several goals here I would suggest looking into the Harris-Tarkett Longstrip floating floor. It's similiar to the cushioned effect of laminate floating floors, but has a much thicker foam padding that is placed on the subfloor prior to the installation of the Tarkett product, which makes for much softer feel in your case.
The Tarkett Longstrip line has many options available in species and colors. Furthermore it can be refinished up to three times as laminate floors cannot. It's one product that I have dealt with over the years and have complete confidence in with the proper installation. And their warranty is a tough one to top!!
In reference to cost versus carpet. That's a tough one to answer as there are seemingly zillions of different prices on all types of floor coverings these days. You should follow up on the link I have provided you as current Tarkett Longstrip pricing from Jeff Hosking is better than what you can find in the major home improvement centers.
Feel free to submit any other thoughts.
