Is it OK to seal up washing machine drain pipe?

Please advise me on the following: our sewer lines (running into the foundation wall)are about 4 feet above the basement floor. The washing maching drains into an open tube that feeds into this line (opening of tube about 7 feet from floor). The problem is there are additional drain lines from the kitchen one floor above into the pipe draining the washing machine and feeding into the sewer line. I have noticed occasional back flows out of the open tube(when large volume of kitchen water, plus washing machine spin cycle) essentially flooding the basement. Is there any problem sealing off this open tube? I would rather have the backflow into the washer or sink where I can detect, rather than out onto the floor. Thanks!
