Bathroom sink plumbing

My bathroom sink doesn't drain very well. (This is a 50 year old house.) The drain pipe is very close to the wall drain. The drain pipe goes down and then back up and out of the wall in order for everything to fit in the small space under the sink. The drain will clear as long as the water runs so I know there is not a clog. However, when the water is turned off, it backs up and stays standing in the drain. Any suggestions for changing the angle of drainage or do I take out the whole sink and start again with another setup? Thanks for any suggestions you can give me!
