Replacing the Bathroom Sink Drain

Hi!
I'm in the middle of replacing a bathroom faucet and matching drain. The faucet went in with no problems :-)
I'm having trouble removing the old sink drain.
I've got both of the coupling nuts (one at the top at the underside of the sink, the other at the bottom of the drain at the top of the trap) loosened. The problem is I can't get the top ring (that the drain stopper sits in when closed) to unscrew off the top of the drain pipe. And there doesn't seem to be a good way to get a grip on it without risking chipping the sink itself.
I'm thinking of taking a hacksaw to the drain pipe just below the sink.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
