: Wanted to find out the average costs and level of sophistication for a water softener. Our water is really bad (15+) and don't know much about them.

: Any feedback would be great.

: Thanks.

In New Jersey the average cost of a complete water softner installed professionaly is about $1500.00. That may be more or less, depending on the state and locality in which you live.

There are several companies who specialize in renting them. The advantages are low monthly cost and free repair/replacement service. The disadvantage is that you will pay forever, never getting it out of your system.

Don't go to Sears - They do not offer a good product when it comes to softners.

When looking, ask for one with an "econominder" control head. This will at least make the softner more efficient, and hopefully use less salt.
