I have exactly the same problem. I have a source for the "break-off" screws that Chris spoke of, but they are no good unless you can locate the undlying floor joists. Also they cost an arm and a leg I tried a stud finder through the carpet. No good. I am about resigned to pull up the carpet and pad... screw down the floor, and recarpet.
What else have you found out?
