In Reply to: mold/water stains on hardwood floor Posted by: Pam on August 02, 1999 at 15:32:19:
: We just bought a house that had hardwood floors under carpet in the bedrooms. When we pulled the carpet up to reveal the wood floors there were a few spots on the floor. Some are around where the carpet pad was stapled to the floor and are dark. I'm thinking maybe there was a water spill.
: The other area is a approx 10" circle of what appears to be mold stain where a plant may have been.
: The house is 43 years old and I don't know what the finish is but will determine using a guide I found on the net. The floor is in good shape otherwise and we would prefer to not refinish them at this point. Is there any way, short of sanding and refinishing, that we could try removing at least the mold stain? Would #000 steel wool be effective without removing the finish?
: Thanks for your input.
Pam,
My guess is the stains are on/in the wood and you will need to remove some wood to remove the stain. You can try the steel wool.. but you will soon get to the wood, if I am right... at that point go ahead and finish sanding off the stains and then just refinsh those areas.
