Jon,
There used to be a site that marketed a tool and screws called Mr Squeeeky.
Unfortunately I can't find it anymore. But the fix is probably doable without him.
The trick was to screw the floor back down through the carpet and then the screw's head broke off below the surface of the floor so it didn't poke up through the carpet.
Since I have broken off my share of screws doing things like this, I am sure it would work... but it will take considerable trial and error to get right.
I wonder where Mr. Squeeeky went...
