: : how do i get rid of them
This man and his mother had both used this method. You take a 5 gallon bucket (like a contractor's paint bucket) and fill it half way with water. Then you dump sunflower seeds in the water that float to the top and cover the surface of the water. I set the bucket at the bottom of some cross-tie steps that I have in my garden about ten feet away from the bird feeder where I normally see all the chipmunks. Then I took a 1 by 6 board that is about two feet long and laid it on one of the steps with the other end at the edge of the bucket. It really reminded me of a swimming pool and diving board but I guess it really is more like the chipmunks have to "walk the plank". I sprinkled a few seeds on the plank. My plank was lying flat, however this man's mother has used a plank like a ramp leading to the bucket.
I watched the first chipmunk walk around the bucket, then a minute later it walked down the board and dived into the sunflower seed swimming pool. Two hours later I was shocked to scoop out five chipmunks. I think that they can't jump as high vertically as a squirrel, and they don't swim well. I would doubt that this would work for squirrels because they could probably jump out. I hope that I don't catch any birds. This man did catch a mouse also. I don't think that I will leave it out at night to bring raccoons and possums to my yard.
