I have a Craftmaster natural gas hotwater heater. Its model G1(A,E,)4034T3N, 40 gal. year 1991. Slowly it has gotten so that I can only take a 5min. shower. The pilot light stays on and the burner starts and seems to work. We do have hard water, don't know it that makes any difference. Please could you give me some ideas to make it work like it used to.

Sounds like you need a new dip tube. An 8 dollar tube that puts the inflow of water to the base of the tank. Several heaters around this time were made with faulty tubes. Also, try draining the tank.
