This is a two or three part question. I want to set up a garden hose reel on the side of my house using a cordless drill, (first time to use). The instructions call for aligning three of the four screw holes "vertically on stud." My questions: How do I know, for sure, I've found the "stud"? When tapping on the wood siding, the sound made determines this...is that correct? The fourth hole would not be on a "stud", I presume, and wonder about possibly drilling into wiring! How do I know where the wiring is located in order to avoid? Or, should this even be a concern? The length of the screws that were included are 1 5/8" and have the plastic pieces that go with them, (forget what those are called). Hope I'm making sense. If you need more info, please let me know. Thanks for your assistance with this!

Answer:
You have wood siding? Great. Forget about the studs and simply screw your reel to the wall. Make sure its level first, (measure from the ground up and mark the two bottom holes).
Your screws should be at least 1" long. As long as you're not hanging three or four hose sections you should be okay. Good luck!

Thanks...what about the wiring? That's not something to be concerned about when drilling? And, could you tell me what is the usual/average thickness of wood siding. Can't help but wonder if I don't drill the screws into a "stud" that the holder might not hold under the weight when the hose is rolled up! You think that's not a concern either?
