This morning our water heater made a knocking/hammering noise for a good 5-10 minutes. This was after a normal usage, (shower), of hot water. Visual inspection showed no leaks. Water heater is about 7-8 years old, in a crawlspace. No previous problems/sounds from the water heater. What is likely the problem & next step/repair?

Answer:
It is my experience that the knocking sound is made by the heater coils inside. It is possible that they have rusted, burned loose from their housing and now are able to knock around freely, especially when heated to warm new water.

This is a good sign that is about time to replace the unit. In fact, I would go ahead and do so to prevent further damage or wearing your heater out until it no longer works whatsoever.

Good luck. I would guess you have about another week out of it, if it is electric and maybe two if it is gas heated.
