We just purchased a home, which has set empty for awhile. Lastnight with the light on we noticed sheetrock ceiling was wavey. How can we correct? Isn't noticable during daylight. Also what can we put on subfloor to make it smooth? Thanks.

Answer:
Several methods for solving the wavy ceiling, the simplest and cheapest is popcorn the ceiling and this will hide most of the wavyness you are seeing. You can texture it with a 5 gallon of premixed spackle, or the most expensive; nail furring strips the opposite way of the ceiling joists and resheetrock. You may need to shim some of the furring strips to make level.

The subfloor needs to be smooth. You can also do this several ways. You can purchase smooth 3/4" plywood and seam together as perfect as you can, or you can staple mesh down over the whole entire floor and smooth over with a mortar mixture. Fairly easy to do, however several days of no furniture and drying time.
